How to Care for Your Countertops

Countertop Care Guide

Material-specific care tips for granite, quartz, and recycled glass countertops. Keep your surfaces looking new for decades.

The Basics

Three Habits That Keep Countertops Looking New

Wipe spills as they happen with mild soap and warm water. Use trivets under hot pans. Reseal natural stone once a year. That is 90 percent of countertop care. Material-specific notes are below.

Granite Care

Seal annually with a stone sealer. Wipe with mild soap and water. Avoid lemon juice or vinegar sitting on the surface.

Quartz Care

No sealing required. Wipe with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh chemicals like bleach.

Recycled Glass

Similar to granite. Seal annually if cement-based. Wipe gently to preserve the polished aggregate look.

Daily Maintenance

Coasters under glasses, cutting boards under knives, trivets under hot pans. Simple habits prevent 90 percent of damage.

Stain Response

Wipe spills immediately. For set-in stains on granite, a baking soda poultice usually lifts them out.

Sealing Schedule

Test by dripping water on the surface. If it absorbs within five minutes, it is time to reseal (granite and recycled glass only).
